Dog Rehabilitation

What is Rehabilitation?

Its term is used in conjunction with therapy aimed at improving behaviour that has been affected by a negative association. It is a continuous and coordinated process which involves the provision of guidance and training.

This work requires an understanding of canine ethology, learning theory, human/animal psychology, and good teaching and communication skills, (human/human as well as human/canine), as well as a plethora of practical experience.

A good dog behaviour expert should provide the problem dog owner the ability and confidence to deal with their specific problem. Owners of dogs with maladaptive behaviour require advice that meets their individual needs and the dog behaviour expert is ideally placed to initially consult an owner whose dog exhibits problem behaviour.

As a general rule, rehabilitation offers the opportunity for a dog to learn or re-train in an environment that replicates the context in which the problem behaviour is displayed. What a dog behaviour expert will do is assess the CAUSE of the behaviour(s) and demonstrate ways to diminish and eliminate the problems.

Involve your dog in as many daily activities and areas of your life and the environment in which you live, as this is only one small aspect of preventing problems. Proper dog on dog social interaction helps ALL dogs learn correct etiquette and you will never have to witness your dog in an altercation with another dog.

Contrary to popular belief all dogs are capable of learning. So don’t under-estimate your 12 year Fido’s ability to adapt to change.

Dogs live in the moment and can adapt to change remarkably fast if given correct guidance so we should give them a chance to change.
